Coefficient of Variation (CV)
The ratio of standard deviation to the mean, expressed as a percentage. It measures relative volatility — how much a stat varies compared to its average level.
Like comparing salary variability: a freelancer earning $5K±$3K per month is far less stable than an employee earning $10K±$3K, even though the dollar swing is the same.
Why it matters
A player averaging 25 points with a CV of 15% is more consistent than one averaging 10 points with a CV of 40%, even though the second player's raw standard deviation might be lower.
How DMP uses this
DMP uses CV as a stability signal when scoring props — lower CV players get higher consistency ratings, which influences the confidence in a P(over) projection.
Common mistake
Looking only at standard deviation without considering the mean — a 3-point standard deviation means very different things for a 25 ppg scorer versus a 6 ppg scorer.
