Odds format showing total return per $1 bet, including your stake. For example, 2.50 means bet $1 to get $2.50 back total.
Like sales tax included vs excluded. Decimal includes your money back, American shows just the profit portion.

Popular internationally and simpler to calculate. Multiply stake by odds to get total return.

We convert to American odds for display, but understanding decimal helps compare international lines.
Common mistake
Forgetting decimal includes your stake. 2.00 decimal doesn't mean you profit $2 - you profit $1 (your $1 stake + $1 profit).
