Pitch Count

The number of pitches a starting pitcher throws in a game. Most starters are pulled between 85-100 pitches.

Like a car's fuel gauge -- once it hits a certain point, the replacement is coming in.

Why it matters

Pitch count directly affects how deep a starter goes, when bullpens enter, and how many plate appearances hitters get.

How DMP uses this

DMP monitors pitch count tendencies to project starter innings and the likelihood of hitters facing relief pitching.

Common mistake

Assuming starters will always go 6+ innings -- modern baseball pulls starters earlier, increasing bullpen exposure.
