Every sports bet falls into one of three categories. Learn all three and you can read any sportsbook.
Moneyline: Who Wins?
The moneyline is the simplest bet — just pick the winner.
How to read it:
- Lakers -150 → Favorite. Bet $150 to win $100.
- Celtics +130 → Underdog. Bet $100 to win $130.
The minus sign means favorite (costs more). The plus sign means underdog (pays more).

Spread: The Head Start
The spread makes lopsided games fair by giving the underdog a "head start."
How to read it:
- Lakers -5.5 → Must win by 6+ points to "cover"
- Celtics +5.5 → Can lose by up to 5 and still "cover"
Example: Final score Lakers 110, Celtics 107 (Lakers win by 3)
- Lakers -5.5 → ❌ Lost (only won by 3, needed 6+)
- Celtics +5.5 → ✅ Won (lost by 3, which is less than 5.5)
The .5 at the end ("the hook") prevents ties.
Total (Over/Under): How Many Points?
Totals let you bet on combined points scored by both teams.
Lakers vs Celtics — Total: 225.5
- Over 225.5 → Both teams combine for 226+ points
- Under 225.5 → Both teams combine for 225 or fewer
You don't care who wins — just how many points are scored.
What affects totals:
- High totals (230+): Fast pace, bad defenses
- Low totals (210-): Slow pace, great defenses, key players out
