Finding +EV Bets Without Tools

Before tools like DMP existed, bettors had to find +EV opportunities manually. Understanding this process helps you appreciate what goes into proper bet evaluation.

The Manual EV Calculation

EV = (Win Probability × Profit) - (Loss Probability × Stake)

To use this, you need:

1. Your estimated true probability
2. The odds being offered
3. Your stake amount

The Manual Process

Step 1: Research the Player

• Check last 10 games for the stat
• Look at season averages
• Note any trends (hot/cold streaks)

Step 2: Evaluate Context

• Who's out? (injuries)
• What's the matchup? (defense ranking)
• What's the game environment? (pace, weather)

Step 3: Estimate True Probability

• Based on your research, what % hits the over?
• Be honest—don't inflate because you want to bet

Step 4: Compare to the Line

• Devig the sportsbook line (see previous lesson)
• Is your probability higher than theirs?
• By how much?

Step 5: Calculate EV

• If your prob is 55% and theirs is 50%
• At -110 odds: EV = (0.55 × 0.91) - (0.45 × 1) = +5.0%
